Search Engine Bait : Headlines Generate Hits

I read an interesting post at Blogs Bloggers Blogging about Search Engine Baiting, which isn't something I've intentionally done, but I have a perfect related experience at my other blog, South Side Star.

In my case, my writing a lot about the Don Imus controversy has drawn an enormous amount of traffic to the site. And specifically, my mentions of Imus's disturbed sidekick, Bernard 'Bernie' McGuirk, have received a tremendous number of click-throughs from the Google Search Engine. I'm ecstatic that so many people have been visiting my blog to read my thoughts about Bernard McGuirk, who was fired.

But the write-up at Blogs Bloggers Blogging takes the concept several steps further. Some of the suggestions, I've actually incorporated in this post. Blog Bloggers Blogging primarily suggests using celebrity names repeatedly in a post, such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. They also tell you to make bold or italicize Britney Spears and Paris Hilton (or whatever your 'big' word is) each time you type it. And then provide a number of links to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton...

Britney Spears is said to have had Cupping Therapy, which sounds like something good for detoxing your body of junk that's bad for you. Way to go, Britney, but hopefully you won't bear your scars from Cupping Therapy for too long

So consider this post a little test for Blog Band-Aids. I can't wait to see how much traffic is generated by using the terms here Bernard 'Bernie' McGuirk, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. 1. Plan Your Blog

Blog Band-Aids -- Whether you want to blog about your dating life, family and friends, real estate business or fashion, there are numerous blogs worth visiting to stimulate your creativity.

~ Determine what subject(s) or theme you want for your blog -- the sky's the limit. Will you blog about topics pertaining to your business or field, or write for fun about your hobbies, interests or lifestyle?

~ Explore various blogs that touch on your area(s) of interest. There are two easy ways to do this right from this site:

* Use the Google Search Box in the sidebar by typing in your favorite subject and "+ blogs."

* Or as an option, use the blue Navigation Bar at the very top of this site to type in your interest + "blog."

~ At each blog you visit, notice the page layouts. Which colors work best for you? Do you prefer the sidebar on the left or right? Notice the different borders, headers and other elements that make each blog unique and easy to read.

~ Now you're ready for Step #2...

2. Buy Good HTML Books

~ The "look" or template design of the blog you've started looks fine. You don't have to learn HTML if you wish to just start writing.

~ However, if you want to install publicity tools that draw traffic for you, or want to change a few things around, you'll have to learn a few things about what's "under the hood" of a website. It's a page called a template; it contains your all-important HTML code.

Type one wrong thing in there and your blog could disappear forever...

~ Spare yourself a headache: Get a book or two about basic HTML coding for websites. The Internet has all the information you need, but some of it uses fairly advanced terms and symbols. Some of it's not too techie, but is confusing nonetheless.

These are some of the basics you'll want to study-up on:

* Change various colors and backgrounds

* Create or move borders around

* Shift titles and headers up or down, left or right

* Upload pictures to your blog and more.

~ Here are two excellent, easy-to-follow books worth considering. Many people purchase two or more books; just one never seems to cover everything you want to have at arms distance when you're blogging:

With a little HTML knowledge you'll be able to implement the special touches that make your blog your masterpiece in cyberspace! People from around the world will come through to enjoy your thoughts, photos and personality, once you do a few things to publicize your site...

3. Build Traffic

Every blogger wants people to visit, read and value their site. Register your blog with blog directories, feed services and/or social networking sites to make hundreds of people each day aware of your place in cyberspace.

Here are some of the directory-type sites where Blog Band-Aids is registered. People everywhere who skim these directories see descriptions and logos for this site and decide whether to click through. And thanks to what's called a feed, visitors can click the button to automatically receive updated entries posted here. The various feed services offer great exposure and help build a loyal following.

Most of them required their promotional button to be shown on this blog, in exchange for a listing. It is usually easy to add the HTML code. Each site provides instructions.
